Products that use materials that among other things are environmentally safe, healthy and recyclable are awarded various levels of the Cradle to Cradle®-certificate. Additionally, the use of renewable energy, a responsible attitude towards water usage as well as social aspects are considered. The certificate is valid for one year. Recertification entails the product criteria being re-confirmed and indeed there is also the possibility that if progress is made, a higher grade of certification can be achieved. The Cradle to Cradle®-certification provides companies with the opportunity of illustrating the successes and progress their products have achieved. From a customer perspective, products can be sought out on the basis of having satisfied this further demand relating to quality.
The certification portrays to what extent a product satisfies limited requirements of Cradle to Cradle®. It does not include aspects such as actively beneficial features e.g. substances that clean the air, or continuous roadmaps to improvement, which instead are developed under the C2C® optimization process. Certification is limited to a snapshot in time showing the status of a product. There are four different grades of certification. They are Basic, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
